I'm always asked, "Is this safe for kids can I take this while I am pregnant/breastfeeding, can I take this alongside ibuprofen?" Herbs are a wonderful way for children to get essential minerals and vitamins to help their body maintain it's healthy state. For pregnant moms herbs can make all the difference in whether they experience morning sickness or not. Mom's that are breastfeeding can find comfort in drinking herbal teas to help soothe their baby's gas. Those that are taking prescribed or over the counter medication can still find comfort in resolving tension with herbs as long as the herb has no contraindications. So majority of the time, my answer to these questions is yes.
So Then, What's the Fuss?
The issues that I usually run into when using herbs for my kids is masking the taste or color so that it looks appealing to them. I even have this issue for myself at times. Although there are a lot of safe herbs for pregnant/breastfeeding moms, children, and using alongside medications, there ARE some herbs that have contraindications. For example, my Yoni Steams (all yoni steams) are not for use in pregnancy because the herbs and steam will be absorbed through the uterus, and can cause uterine contractions. Another example is when taking St Johns Wort, this herb can cause many different medications to behave differently in the body. The best thing to do when shopping for personal herbs is to make sure you have worked with an herbalist and talked about your health background. With children, a lot of the western herbs are safe but some children, even adults, find that they have a sensitivity or an allergy to some of the plant families. Even with most of the products on my site being safe for for both breastfeeding mom and children be sure to read all information on the website as well as the instructions on the packaging.
